Greetings, feminist ethicists and social theorists. My college is happy to announce its first ever tenure-track job opening in Women and Gender Studies.

Note that job applications should go to the contact in the advertisement below and not to me. I have worked at this college seven years and I'm happy to answer general queries, but I am really not the contact person for actual hiring.

ST. MARY'S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND

Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSX) Program at St. Mary's College of Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship-the program's first full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Ph.D. required with preference given to those candidates with a doctorate in Women, Gender, and / or Sexuality Studies, although candidates with degrees in a traditional discipline with significant graduate-level coursework, teaching, and / or research in WGSX will also be considered. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is desirable. Contingent upon final funding approval, the position will begin on August 1, 2009.

We seek a candidate whose first priority is high-quality teaching at a liberal arts college. The successful candidate will demonstrate ability and interest in interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, community involvement, and collaboration with colleagues from a variety of departments. Teaching responsibilities consist of three courses per semester: this will include facilitating the collaboratively taught gateway courses in Introduction to Gender Studies and Introduction to Women Studies, each offered once annually; at least one intermediate theory course each year in the candidate's area(s) of expertise; and additional upper-level courses according to the needs of the WGSX program and the candidate's specialization(s).

Non-sectarian since its founding, St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public Carnegie Baccalaureate, Arts and Sciences institution located in Historic St. Mary's City, 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., has been designated as Maryland's public honors college. With highly selective admissions policies, academically talented students, and a rigorous curriculum, we offer a small college experience similar to that found at exceptional private colleges. St. Mary's faculty benefit from a comprehensive program of support for scholarship, research, travel, and curriculum development, including course releases for pre-tenure faculty and leaves for tenured faculty. The quality of life is enhanced by the recreational opportunities of the Chesapeake region and by our proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

Please send curriculum vitae, a cover letter including a statement of teaching interests and research, a statement of teaching philosophy, graduate academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (including at least two addressing teaching ability) to Dr. Jennifer Cognard-Black, Coordinator, WGSX Program, Dept. of English, St. Mary's College of Maryland, 18952 E. Fisher Rd., St. Mary's City, MD 20686-3001. For further information about the WGSX program, please visit: http://www.smcm.edu/wgsx/home.html <http://www.smcm.edu/wgsx/home.html> or email Dr. Cognard-Black at [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> .

Review of applications will begin December 15, 2008 and continue until the position is filled. St. Mary's College of Maryland (www.smcm.edu) is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
