*ANNOUNCING THE 2015 VIDA COUNT*

*2015 COUNT INCLUDES NUMBERS ON RACE/ ETHNICITY, GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND
DISABLITY*

March 30, 2016 — VIDA: Women in Literary Arts announces our 2015
Intersectional VIDA Count! https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.vidaweb.org_the-2D2015-2Dvida-2Dcount_&d=BQIFaQ&c=eLbWYnpnzycBCgmb7vCI4uqNEB9RSjOdn_5nBEmmeq0&r=Oo4TCJF8pXcsWPDC7Sy8bdP2IJ6ZbST0v2xdYtuNH80&m=vMSXDF_uzy8rQ8hM73IQbVvPjB4z9dIk4r0PVbZY-5E&s=jIi9Zkb9ULebHO4BalMZyH48Ag5iOvkHt6sbJ18MWi4&e=

VIDA is proud to introduce our newly-expanded VIDA Count. In this
iteration, we examine race and ethnicity, gender, sexual identity and
ability. The numbers show that, while the landscape is improving for women
in terms of representation and parity, there is a long way to go to ensure
all women receive equal representation in the literary arts.

Some data:

-There was a noticeable absence of non-heterosexual writers in *The
Atlantic*, which published 19 bylines by straight/heterosexual writers and
just one byline by a writer whose sexual identity is broad spectrum.

-According to the self-reported intersectional demographic data, six of the
fifteen publications in VIDA’s Main Count did not publish bylines by women
writers who identify as disabled or a person with a disability.

-Seven of the fifteen publications in VIDA’s Main Count did not publish
bylines by writers who are trans women, trans
women-genderqueer/genderfluid, or trans women-transfeminine.

-The publication that reflected the most diversity with at least one survey
respondent in ten different racial/ethnic identity categories was *The New
York Times Book Review**.*During the last count period, it published one
byline by a writer who responded to the survey and identified as a woman of
color.

VIDA strives to spark public conversation about the intersection of gender,
race, sexuality, and disability, and how these identities affect the way
writers are perceived, and therefore received, by the publishing world. We
hope to be able to count more categories in future years.
