Re: call for speaker proposals
If you know what it is like to fight for reproductive justice in
conservative areas, and you’d like to share your wisdom with eager young
folks in “red” states, please consider attending the 5th annual Take Root
conference at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, February 20 & 21,
2015. This is a reproductive justice conference built by and for students
who are often ignored by national pro-choice organizations, who consider
some places just too conservative to waste money on outreach. First
conceived as a Midwest version of Hampshire College’s annual CLPP
conference (founded by Marlene Fried) and sponsored by National Advocates
for Pregnant Women since 2011, the Take Root Conference is currently hosted
by University of Oklahoma’s Center for Social Justice (Jill Irvine,
director) and reaches out to young feminists whose families, friends, and
professors are often as conservative as their government officials. Below
is the call for proposals, and more information can be found at
http://take-root.org/.
Take Root Speaker Proposals
Proposals for the 2015 Take Root: Red State Perspectives on Reproductive
Justice Conference should address how presenters will connect to
reproductive rights and justice in red states; include concrete take-aways,
new information, or action items participants will gain; and describe how
the presenters became and are currently involved with the issues.
Proposals are Due: September 15, 2014
We accept three different types of proposals:
Presentations are typically 10-15 minutes in length. We will combine three
or four presentations on related topics to build intersectional panels with
adequate time for discussion. Describe your work, how it connects to
reproductive justice, your background, and what you hope participants will
gain from your presentation. If accepted, we will work with you and connect
you with other speakers working on related topics to create an interactive
panel or workshop.
Workshops are generally 1 ½ hours long and are submitted by one or more
people who have an intersectional, interactive presentation to share.
Workshops take many formats – from know-your-rights sessions, to media
trainings, to arts or performance workshops, to organizing strategy
sessions. If you are submitting a proposal for a workshop, please describe
the goals and take-aways for the session and provide contact and
biographical information for all of the presenters.
Strategic action sessions are generally 1 ½ hours long and provide a space
for activists to learn from each other’s organizing work and share
strategies, successes, and challenges. Examples of past strategy sessions
include Service Provision and Practical Support in Red States; Policy
Change in Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice; Building a “Flyover”
Reproductive Justice Movement; and many more.
All proposals should be engaging and dynamic, and should strive to be
accessible to a diverse audience of both emerging leaders and long-time
activists. Proposals should acknowledge the intersection of movements and
oppressions with reproductive justice. Please provide contact and
biographical information for all presenters.
If you would like to participate in the conference in other ways – by
framing and moderating a panel; facilitating a caucus space; sharing arts,
performance, or media-making skills; or blogging about the conference
please email [log in to unmask] Please let us know about the
community-building skills you have to share!
The deadline to submit a speaker or panel is September 15, 2014 at 11:59pm
CST.
