Gregg and Tim:
Reading the acknowledgments in "The Enigma of Reason" (which is where
I always start when reading a book), I guess I wasn't surprised to
find "John and Max Brockman, our agents" listed there. Or, that George
Soros' "Central European University" is involved.
Over the years, I've dealt with many associated with these
"institutions" and in colloquial terms, this is an academic "mafia"
that you are dealing with. These are the sorts of folks who make me
glad that I saw what happened to my parents as academics and decided
early-on -- after departing 2x PhD programs -- to pursue my own career
elsewhere in computer architecture/software, Wall Street and business.
Not to say that those activities don't also include "bad actors" but
the rules are different and results tend to trump posturing. Making
people 1000x their money does provide some job security (but not that
much.)
The Brockmans -- who I know and also represent my friends Doug
Rushkoff (about to publish his "Team Human Manifesto") and John
Markoff (now writing the authorized biography of Stewart Brand), along
with Steven Pinker (author of "Enlightenment Now!") &al -- are deeply
in cahoots with the publishers. They have largely monopolized
"science" publishing for decades and regularly get favorable press on
their PR exploits.
One thought would be to turn their presumed "justification" of their
own actions against them and illustrate how this ordeal illustrates
their own points about "reason" failing in their own case (and perhaps
more broadly in the wider industries involved.)
I greatly sympathize with you for what you are up against and regret
that, unless your "gang" is bigger than theirs, the results aren't
likely to be favorable. Make no mistake about it, by raising these
questions, you are entering into gang-warfare and will need a
well-armed Crips to go up against their Bloods . . . !!
Mark
P.S. Not that it will help much but these sorts of behaviors --
particularly the post-modern denigration of "reason" -- are very much
a result of TELEVISION as a psycho-technological environment.
Brockman & Co got their start in the 1970s riding the "hippie-wave,"
beginning with Brockman's own background in "performance art" and his
association with Stewart Brand's "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests" (as
Tom Wolfe referred to the Grateful Dead's LSD-in-the-park adventures.)
Brand talked Brockman into rep'ing Gregory Bateson, another LSD
stalwart (and, coincidentally, a nemesis to my "godfather," Norbert
Wiener, in cybernetics.) Kevin Kelly was Brand's protege and is,
along with Brand, one of this "gangs" top advisors (along with George
Dyson, who is a Fellow at my Center.) This is 50 year-old story that
is now coming to any end (i.e. John is retired and his son Max is
trying to keep the plates spinning.) Hopefully you can rise above all
this and put some more nails in its coffin.
