 You're welcome, Gregg.

Perhaps it is worth rationally exploring what is entailed by the statement, "Humans justify".

For example, it would seem that the "fact-value" problem is implicit in the statement.

Human justification would imply a particular linguistic means to an end. And any "end" implies something of value to the one aiming for that "end"...something that "is not" but "ought to be".

The linguistic means to that end would suggest, at least, a belief that that linguistic means is factual (even if it's not)...at the very least, to the recipient of that justification. Or perhaps more precisely, at the very least, the "justifer" believes that the recipient of that justification believes that that justification is factual.

In short, human justification is a means to an end. The "end" is necessarily perceived as something of value, the means to that end is at least perceived to be something of fact.

Hi Jason,

I remember our conversation along these lines and appreciated the point. Thanks for reminding us of it here.

Best,
Gregg

Hi ToKers,

From the blog:

"By calling it a “hypothesis,” Gregg was issuing a kind of challenge to “not see” the claim. In other words, it can be thought of as a kind of “undersell” that creates a strange loop of confirmation. As you try to “disconfirm” the hypothesis, you realize that you are engaged in a process of justification that confirms it."

This reminds me of a few years ago when I suggested to Gregg that the statement, "Humans justify", could be considered axiomatic. Any attempt to counter-argue that statement would itself constitute a human justification. That is, any attempt to counter-argue the statement, "Humans justify", would be self-contradictory, hence making the statement axiomatic.

Have a good one,
Jason

Hi List,

Joe M and I just put up a post explaining why we are changing name of the Justification Hypothesis to Justification Systems Theory. Here it the link:
