All,

Branding is important! Gregg and I have had plenty discussions about this so I'm sure he's not surprised by my speaking up about The ToK Society logo.

If I'm remembering correctly, we have at least one artist on the listserv, so my thought is to ask if he/she can work a little on the logo, making it more than just a PowerPoint graphic.

In terms of my own feedback:

- I like the backdrop's similarity to that of da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, especially concerning the symbology of the drawing (the bringing together of ideas about art, architecture, anatomy, and symmetry).

- The tree itself seems too busy. If you're really trying to brand The ToK Society, I'd suggest sticking with a clean and simple design. I'd remove each of the graphics that you have on the tree as they stand now, and wonder about putting Roman numerals in each of the circles. The numerology behind 9 is interesting and seemingly compatible with certain aspects of The ToK Society (life, purpose, humanitarianism, physical/intellectual/spiritual worlds, inner wisdom, etc.)...not that the number "actually" matters, but having such unconscious/intuitive/underlying themes isn't a bad thing : )

- Is there anyway that you can dull the brightness of the tree graphic as well? I don't mind the contrast, but it seems almost comically juxtaposed at this point.

If I still had Adobe Creative Suite on my computer I'd give it a go, but alas, I'm a poor graduate student who cannot fund her creative endeavors at this point.

Hope "the artist" has the time to work on this. I think it's that important.

Warmly,

Ali

Subject: Re: Conference Build up

Thanks Gregg et al. I'd like to propose that we use the meeting in part to formally launch the creation of the ToK Society as a professional organization, with all the attendant formalities. I know this requires some work - and I'm more than happy to contribute toward formalizing the organizational structure. Why go to the trouble? I'll state my bias up front.

Even though I have not contributed too much as yet to the general discussions, I've already found this to be the most interesting and 'useful' intellectual group to which I've belonged. Nothing against the various other professional organizations, but their foci tend to be far more operational and logistical rather than substantive. Even the meetings are often, at least in sociology, far less scientifically progressive and ambitious than the ideas that we are discussing.

Thus I believe we are well-positioned to continue our inter-disciplinary discussions, as well as possible collaborative research opportunities (which some of us are already pursuing). Furthermore, I'd argue we're in a strong enough position now or perhaps following the conference to launch ourselves more directly into the public sphere. I'd like us through the ToK Society to establish a reputation as a trusted source of scientific discourse about behavior and knowledge construction. And while I have never longed to be a "public intellectual" myself, we may want to position ourselves in certain ways (e.g., Gregg's Psychology Today blog) into certain dialogues and avenues in promoting the value of what we do.

Love the logo. If people are agreed, then perhaps we can set aside a working session to launch the ToK Society. I know we have limited time. Just a thought. With kind regards, -Joe

Subject: Conference Build up

Hi List,

I am writing to let folks know that the focus of the list will be on the upcoming conference sponsored by this society, Toward a Big Theory of Knowledge, here at JMU, April 12 and 13 (flyer attached).

I am going to add all conference participants to this list on Monday, and then will remove anyone who would like after the conference. The goal is to build momentum into the conference by fostering engagement and points of discussion. Everyone who is presenting will have an opportunity, if they would like, to share their slides on this list and invite comments and questions.

To initiate that build up, starting Monday, I will be leading this list on a tour of the ToK/UTUA system, with a special focus on the key elements that lead up to the conference. In particular, I will be highlighting the language game of the key elements that make up the system and will be sharing why the system might succeed as a big theory of knowledge where others have not.

Here let me share that I have developed a Theory of Knowledge Society symbol:

I welcome feedback on it. I will be offering brief summaries of the nine key elements that make up this Tree. And I will also be sharing the argument why the “problem of psychology” and its solution is crucial to questions about how to move toward a more complete theory of knowledge.

Per usual, I welcome thoughts or comments

Best,

Gregg
