Thanks for this note, John. I completely agree. My motto, Be that which enhances dignity and well-being with integrity is grounded on exactly the kind of thinking you offer here. Namely, we need to distill the key principles to live by and cultivate individuals and groups to embody those elements.

Best,
G

I cannot comment based on psychological principles. But I will say that I find it reprehensible that we as a society cannot address our problems based on principles instead of symptoms. Whether it is race or gender, we don't discuss the sources of such behaviors in the context of profiling and sexual differentiation, respectively. Instead, we discuss the consequences independently of their causes, failing to build on our knowledge of the past in order to avoid committing errors in judgement and behavior. In the present case, by removing icons in the name of social reform we undermine the fabric of society based on emotion instead of reason. It would, IMHO, be healthier to discuss the mores and conditions of the times in which such icons lived and move on, learning from our past errors instead of sweeping them under the proverbial rug. Such iconoclastic behavior is the way in which the old Soviet Union operated. As a free Democracy we should be able to assimilate our past and build towards a better future, not surgically excise the past and deny our history.“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it- George Santayana".

Hi List,
I have been invited to author a chapter on the dangers of groupthink from the vantage point of the JH. Attached is a draft I generated. I will need to submit the final in the next month or so, and I would welcome feedback if folks have it. (It is about at the length required).

Best,
Gregg
