I am sure many of you have been working particularly hard these days. I hope we all take time out to appreciate all you do, especially given the way the world is today.

It is a vision of knowledge and wisdom for the 21st Century that builds off and corrects some of the Enlightenment insights and errors. One of the great errors was an extreme individualism. We are deeply relational beings. The core socio-emotional need is the need to be known and valued by important others, which is called “relational value” in the language of the Unified Framework (see slide below). As James Mark Baldwin put it, “Ego and Alter are born together”. Actually, in some ways, we are relationally born prior to the ego. Our relational system kicks in prior to birth and we are born prepared to be attached, and prior to having a self-conscious ego system. In this way, we know the relational feel of our mothers before we know our selves.
