Blaine, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. The problem with all the
muddledness on what is species typical for human beings is the lack of a
common baseline for determining species typicality. One cannot use humans
raised in civilized nations to make any judgments about species typicality
(e.g., human nature) because their evolved nest is deeply violated,
undermining their development from the beginning including from epigenetic
inheritance of stress from prior mistreated generations.

Humans are dynamic systems and dynamic systems are greatly influenced by
their beginnings, which shapes trajectory. Modern societies undermine human
potential from before birth (maternal stress, lack of support, pollutants,
etc), at birth (with routine separation of baby from mother, painful
procedures) and after birth with cultural myths (e.g., a "good baby" sleeps
through the night, alone). All this distress shapes social worldview at a
very deep level--forming a sense of deep insecurity and a fear-driven life.
That is not our species-typical heritage, but representative of the
deterioration of child raising from the last 1% (last 10,000 years or
so)--at least this is my view. More here:

To get a species-typical baseline, you have to look at societies that
provide the evolved nest which anthropologists and others have done. That's
the book I'm working on during my sabbatical.
