Grab some design books, and start building.  I usually start my rookies
with a pre-designed robot (i.e. the instructional builds), and let them
work from there...it's a great way to learn solid build techniques.  Go
through some programming challenges to learn little things that will help
you learn.  Start small, and avoid being overly ambitious.  Maybe try a
sumobot challenge as a way to get the kids excited, and your feet wet.
