I'm just going to chime in - not adding fuel to any fire - but something for FIRST to consider.  It might be time to start an add on category just FOR community groups.  School groups are limited in their time to practice and in funds for their needs.  It has been mentioned for years now that community groups can meet more often and sometimes have more resources than school-based groups- which may give an advantage to those outside of schools.  So, in the spirit of gracious professionalism, why not just add a category during competitions FOR community groups.  Everyone still is able to compete - just like we do with the different age categories now, but the playing field is more equitable.

You are in correct in that the only way to purchase the Discover Set right now is through the class pack option.  I know this can be frustrating for community-based organizations.  We have brought that feedback to FIRST, but I will be sure to reiterate the frustration, because your point is valid and I don’t think you are the only organization in this position.



Aside from coupling with another organization, there are not many other options.  I do have a few ideas, but I will connect with you separately off the ListServ.

All,

I need help-- I'm so frustrated.

Does anyone know how to get a FIRST® LEGO® League Discover set outside of buying the 30 required when buying through FIRSTInspires.org? I run a small community-based organization that runs 1 team in each age group and literally need 1 Discover set; I have two (maybe 3) kids in this 4-6 age group and they are requiring a whole pack (30 kids!!) be purchased together ($395 + shipping and fees); we just can't afford that. And you can't order individuals unless you first purchase the class pack. Has anyone else ordered and have an extra set/overage, maybe? Is someone going to order and I can add on?

This new model is brutal for neighborhood and community group-based teams.
