I do understand that I can spend even more money that my team doesn't have to be more competitive. We can also plug/ unplug a motor but that goes back to my time disadvantage. I will stop ranting. I love FLL and what my kids get out of it. This is my 6 year competing and the only time I have found fault with what is being done.

One way to recover (some of the) time disadvantage would be to add the fourth motor to the NXT-brick based frame, and plug it in when needed, after unplugging another motor. Also, one can get a new EV3 brick for $160.

But that is the way USFirst sees it. As I understand it

That is not entirely true. When the RCX was replaced by the NXT, there was a score bonus given to teams using the RCX brick. I have new team members every year so that experience factor doesn't fit as well.

The same was true when the RCX was replaced by the NXT. The EV-3 actually has several advantages (larger memory, faster processor, new sensors like the gyro sensor), the ball wheel, the smaller motor, new programming blocks like the adv math block, etc) in addition to the forth motor ability, but the experience of FFL veterans is that experience, knowledge, and discipline so trump the technical advantages that there is no real advantage.

I am confused on the 4 motors. The EV3 allows 4 motors to be plugged into it at one time. The NXT only allows 3 at a time. I have seen adapters to allow 4 but those are not allowed. How is this not an advantage? If my team uses an NXT and has to only use 3 motors or transfer a motor on and off in order to have 4, they are automatically at a time disadvantage to a team using an EV3 with 4 motors already attached. Just wondering on how the thought process went to determine that there isn't an advantage to using the EV3 over the NXT.
