Asha is right! It was a terrific conference and program co-chairs Jeanine Weekes Schroer and Gaile Pohlhaus Jr. did an incredible job. For me it is especially gratifying to see a younger and more diverse generation of philosophers moving into leadership with fresh ideas and energy. Thanks to all of you.

Subject: Updates from FEAST 2019

Dear FEAST members,

FEAST 2019 was a huge success. The conference truly lived up to its acronym aptly selected by the founding members of the organization 20 years ago. If you were not at the conference, you can see a number of photos and posts about it on social media (facebook, twitter, Instagram) by looking up #FEAST2019. I want to thank the entire program committee again, led by our seemingly indefatigable program co-chairs Jeanine Weekes Schroer and Gaile Pohlhaus, Jr.

Our organization is more diverse than ever, and as it continues to evolve, I invite attendees to contact me or our Diversity Chair and Chair-Elect Shay Welch ([log in to unmask]<mailto:([log in to unmask]>), or our Accessibility Chair Christine Wieseler <[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>> with comments and suggestions about the conference so that we can take them into account as we plan for FEAST 2021.

Today (below), I’m sending out updates on resolutions passed at the Business Meeting as well as a range of decisions from the Steering Committee. We are planning for FEAST’s long-term future as the vanguard of feminist philosophy with a number of new measures, so please read through them to think about whether you want to get more involved with FEAST by taking on one of the new roles outlined among them. And please plan to attend the business meeting in 2021 to participate in the next round of decisions to guide the future of FEAST.

Warmly,

Asha

Resolutions from the business meeting October 5, 2019

Motions approved:

1. FEAST will work to take up the process of awarding the DWP award, which seems to be no longer working.

o If we do award it, we will continue to award it at the Eastern APA.

o We are looking for someone to Chair that effort. Please contact me ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) if you are interested in taking on this important role.

2. We approved a motion to add a second position to the Steering Committee: Development Chair. This person will work in concert with the Chair and Chair-Elect. We will appoint someone into this position for the first term, after which the position should be an elected one. It will be a 3-5 year term. The Development Chair should be a person with the ability to identify possible sources of funding. **They need not be a current member of FEAST, but they must become a member of FEAST upon becoming Development Chair. This is a good position for a person with knowledge of fundraising and/or banking who wants to support feminism.**

o Please think about whether you know someone who has a fundraising skill set who might be interested in supporting the mission of FEAST. If the person is willing to serve this vital role for feminist philosophy, please nominate them by sending their information to Saba Fatima, Elections and Nominations Chair, at [log in to unmask]

3. We will no longer require full paper submissions. Instead, we will require that people submit “Extended abstracts of 750-1000 words with a bibliography”.

4. All presenters must have a current membership.

5. We had a discussion about accessibility, and voted that childcare should be included among the dimensions of accessibility that we would like to consider funding if our budget grows with more donations, an endowment, etc. We are going to continue the practice of case by case assessments of individual’s needs to attend the conference and will continue to discuss conference practices to become more inclusive. There will be an election for a new accessibility chair when Christine Wieseler’s term ends. (Christine was our first accessibility chair, and we affirmed the necessity of filling this position again for the organization.)

Additional updates from the Steering Committee and Business Meeting

1. Tempest Henning will be a program co-chair for FEAST 2021, for which the tentative planned theme is “The politics of self-care in an unjust word.”

2. We added the Social Media Outreach Chair position as an appointed 2-year position. Spencer Nabors, a senior philosophy major at Spelman College and FEAST member. The primary responsibilities of this position are to post photos and short bursts of news from the FEAST conference. The term for the position is 2 years, and we set the term as effective immediately at FEAST 2019, (Oct. 2, 2019), through Oct. 31, 2021, so that the SMOC has two conferences for which they are responsible.

3. We decided to create an undergraduate panel at the conference to build the pipeline in feminist philosophy. *Feel free to tell your students that they will be able to submit papers to FEAST for the next conference.*

4. We will add a poster session to the next conference.

5. We discussed and confirmed that we will maintain our relationship with Hypatia for the next conference volume.

6. In light of the value of continuity, we want to emphasize that the Chair should feel free to run for a second term (and that we welcome Chairs doing so), but an election should be held every time, and there should be a two-term limit.

7. The FEAST chair will become an ex-officio Chair when their term ends for the purpose of promoting cultivate institutional memory.

8. We are going to set up an endowment for FEAST, which could be used to fund an “Undergraduate Student Paper Award for Excellence in Feminist Philosophy”, among other things. Until we fill the position of development chair, anyone who wishes to learn more about how to make a large donation should contact Asha Bhandary at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or FEAST treasurer Keya Maitra at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

9. We will reserve a session for current events at the next conference.
