Thanks for the quick responses.  

I'm in the Staunton/Waynesboro area.  I plan on attending a Coach's 
Workshop at the end of August, and I'm sure that will help ease my concerns. 

I know that there's a lot to be learned just by going through the competition 
process.  I think my parents are more worried about throwing the research 
together on one hand and not wanting to put their own time into it at home 
on the other.  I think it will help them to see that teamwork and design play a 
big role also.

Is there a good resource for guiding 9 year olds through the process?  For 
instance, can I assign the boys things to do on their own to research it?
