Brandy,

That is nicely done, thanks for sending it around. During my FLL coaching days, I liked the philosophy of giving the team access to techniques they could handle and understand, and we would spend some time early in the season or in the off season helping them develop their basic planning and programming skills. Guiding them to an understanding of the various turning strategies, and to the point of being able to pre-calculate the moves needed to drive a certain distance or turn a certain amount would save gobs of time later in the season, time better spent thinking about strategy (or working on the research project).

When working on this math-and-calibration stuff, the "view" feature is handy, whereby the raw output from a wheel sensor is shown on the computer screen. A drawback is that it only shows the output of one sensor, and in uncalibrated bits. For those with some programming skill, and time, it's a fun project to write a program that displays the output of all three rotation sensors, right on the NXT brick screen, in scaled units. I worked with a couple of our more program-savvy kids to develop a version that uses a MyBlock within which is some code that uses wires. If you're interested in the program, or in some hints for how to get started writing one, let me know.

Cheers,
Mike Blanpied
